- La famiglia, secondo lo storico Benedetto Blasi, prese il cognome della Valle dal luogo in cui verso il secolo XII si stabilì e cioè una "valle" acquitrinosa che si estendeva a Roma fra l'odierna Torre Argentina, la Chiesa Nuova (detta anche in Vallicella) ed il Pantheon. Il più importante della Valle è considerato il cardinale Andrea, morto nel 1534, che fece edificare la Chiesa, il Palazzo ed il Teatro che portano tuttora il suo nome. Ultimo discendente dei della Valle fu Pietro la cui figlia Romobera sposò nel 1633 il marchese Ottavio Benedetto Del Bufalo. Secondo lo storico del Seicento Teodoro Amayden, i della Valle erano di origine spagnola. Il cognome originario era De Lavalle.
